Research Areas
Occupational engagement for older adults and health indices
Research Overview
Our laboratory conducts research on activity participation and healthy aging based on the philosophy and principles of occupational therapy. Our goal is to develop activity-focused public health approaches that promote health and prevent the need for long-term care among community-dwelling older adults.
Our current research focuses on the following areas:
1) Development of an Assessment Tool for Activity Participation among Community-Dwelling Older Adults
We developed the Activity Card Sort–Japan (ACS-JPN), an assessment tool designed to evaluate activity participation among community-dwelling older adults in Japan. The ACS-JPN consists of 72 activity items across four domains: instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), low-physical-demand leisure activities, high-physical-demand leisure activities, and sociocultural activities.
2) Activity Participation and Health among Community-Dwelling Older Adults
We investigate how the diversity and patterns of activity participation are associated with a wide range of health outcomes among community-dwelling older adults in Japan. Our research aims to provide scientific evidence for promoting healthy aging through meaningful engagement in everyday activities.
3) Development of Activity-Focused Public Health Approaches
In collaboration with community-based long-term care prevention programs, we are developing and implementing activity-focused public health interventions. Ultimately, we aim to establish robust evidence for their effectiveness through randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
