Leading University in Innovation, Research, and Education in Asia

From print, photography, cinema, and television to personal computers, smartphones, and artificial intelligence, media have played a profound—often imperceptible—role in shaping modern and contemporary societies. They have both mobilized and been mobilized by people, objects, and information. This collaborative project between Nagoya University (NU) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) focuses on historical and contemporary East and Southeast Asian contexts to investigate how textual, visual, and aural media have mediated and propelled the circulation of people, goods, and information. It further examines how these mediatized dynamics have contributed to societal development while also exacerbating issues such as social inequality and environmental degradation.
Our approach is innovative in its integration of two distinct yet complementary methodologies: the cutting-edge techniques of digital humanities and the deeply rooted insights of critical humanities. The latter has been instrumental in raising awareness of systemic inequities and the anthropocentric domination of the planet.
