Nagoya University Singapore Community Participates in Japanese Cemetery Park Clean-up

On August 24, 2024, three members of the Nagoya University Singapore Community together with 16 students from Mihama Town and Ngee Ann Secondary School, who were taking part in an exchange program in Singapore from August 22 to 26, 2024 joint a clean-up volunteer event at the Japanese Cemetery Park.


During the event, participants listened to a talk on the history of Singapore and Japan by Mr. Kazuo Sugino, the former Secretary-General of the Japanese Association in Singapore. Following the clean-up, the group had the opportunity to learn about Singaporean culture at a Teochew Porridge restaurant, hosted by the Aichi Prefectural Association of Singapore.


The Japanese Cemetery Park located in Hougang, Singapore. It is the largest Japanese cemetery in Southeast Asia at 29,359 square metres, consisting of 910 tombstones that contain the remains of members of the Japanese community in Singapore, including young Japanese prostitutes, civilians, soldiers and convicted war criminals executed in Changi Prison. It was gazetted as a memorial park by the Singapore government in 1987.
